Am 19. August 1812 folgte auf die Schlacht von Smolensk ein weiteres Aufeinandertreffen zwischen Frankreich und Russland statt: Schlacht bei Walutino.

Möglicherweise wäre der fatale Russlandfeldzug anders ausgegangen, wenn Napoleon die Situation nach Walutino etwas anders eingeschätzt hätte:
